Today I want to talk to you about MONEY because I’m just seeing EVERYWHERE how your negative beliefs around money can keep you from actually achieving the success you desire.
Let’s be honest- I think we all have stuff around money. Whether we grew up with a ton of it, or watched our parents struggle to put food on the table, our childhood experiences, whether you’re conscious of it or not, have framed the way that you think about money today.
For some of us, our political, cultural, or spiritual beliefs have also gotten all tied up and confused around money.
As a teenager and through most of my twenties, a HUGE part of my identity was as a political activist and staunch environmentalist. However the culture of activism also has some deep seated (and I believe, damaging) dialogues around martyrdom and money. For example I would NEVER actually make a real difference in the world, if I was ALSO receiving tons of money.
You may have grown up with the idea that money is really hard to come by. You may have heard the phrases often, “I’m not made of money,” or “money doesn’t grow on trees” and so sometimes what that can result in as an adult, is guilt around money, or making having money mean something NEGATIVE.
For me, my biggest fears around actually making money were:
– That if I had a ton of money I would become a Republican (Still not a Republican! As a Vermonter I am a HUGE Bernie supporter!)
– That somehow my love for the environment would fade (that has not happened!)
– That I would lose my “edge” as an adventurous traveler and start being a weird person who takes cruises and can’t ride a chicken bus (hell NO that hasn’t happened!)
So I want to challenge you to really look at what stories you’re holding on to around money. ESPECIALLY any of the negative things you’re telling yourself about who you might become once you have money. Put some time on the calendar this week or over the weekend to uncover what might be holding you back in this area. And remember, you ALWAYS have control over your choices….
